About the Extract PDF Pages

The Extract PDF Pages tool pulls hand-picked pages out of a larger PDF and writes them into a brand-new document, in the exact order you specify. Load a file, then type a page list like 1,3,5-7 into the "Pages to extract" field. The parser accepts individual numbers and ranges in any combination, preserves the order you typed — including duplicates — and shows a live preview of badges (p3, p5, p6) so you can see the new document's sequence before committing. A stats row reports the source page count and how many pages will be extracted, and the output always downloads as <name>-extracted.pdf. Because copying happens with pdf-lib entirely in the browser, nothing leaves your machine — a real advantage when the document is a contract, a scan of ID, or a confidential report. Encrypted files are caught and reported with a specific password-protection error. Where the Split tool breaks documents apart wholesale, this extract selected pages from a PDF tool is surgical: it exists for the moment you need just the signature page, the appendix, or the three pages that matter out of a hundred.

Hand-written guide

Examples

Input
A 100-page agreement with Pages to extract "12,47-49".
Output
agreement-extracted.pdf containing page 12 followed by pages 47, 48, 49 — four pages total.
Note: The preview badges confirm the sequence before extraction.
Input
Pages to extract "3,3,1" for a 10-page document.
Output
A three-page PDF in the order 3, 3, 1 — duplicates are preserved, which is useful for building repeated pages.
Note: The tool does not deduplicate; what you type is what you get.
Input
An invalid token like "1,abc,9-3" typed into the field.
Output
A red error message in the preview card — "Unrecognised token: "abc"" or a range-out-of-bounds note — and the button stays inert until fixed.
Note: Errors surface before any processing starts.

Common use cases

  • Pulling the signature page out of a 40-page contract for a quick reference copy.
  • Building a smaller deck from selected slides of a large presentation.
  • Assembling a reading packet from chapters scattered across a textbook scan.
  • Extracting the appendix from an annual report to send separately.
  • Creating a short proof document from key pages of a print layout.
  • Reordering pages by listing them in a custom sequence (3,1,2).

Best practices

  • List pages in the order you want them in the new PDF — that is exactly the output order.
  • Use the preview badges to proof your list before clicking extract.
  • Reuse ranges for repetitive tasks, like pulling 1-4 from every monthly statement.
  • Keep the source file unchanged as your master; extractions are copies.
  • Watch for the out-of-bounds message when your list exceeds the page count.

Tips

  • The p# badge preview is your order-of-pages safety net.
  • Use ranges for big spans and commas for scattered pages in one list.
  • The "Last result" stat confirms how many pages the previous run produced.
  • Extract twice with different lists to compare page subsets quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Comma-separated numbers and ranges, such as 1,3,5-7. Ranges expand in ascending order, and the overall sequence follows the order you typed.
