GPA Calculator
Calculate grade point average across courses with weight.
About the GPA Calculator
The GPA Calculator computes a weighted grade point average from a list of courses you control entirely — add as many rows as you need, pick a letter grade from A+ down to F, and enter the credit hours, and the running GPA updates live on every keystroke. The math is a classic weighted average: each grade's point value is multiplied by its credits, the points are summed, and the total is divided by total credits, so a four-credit A counts more than a two-credit A. The grade dropdown shows every point value beside the letter, from 4.0 for A+ and A down to 0.0 for F, on a fixed 4.0 scale that the results card labels clearly. Rows with empty, zero, or negative credit values are quietly excluded from the average, which protects the result from accidental junk rows. Two sample courses come prefilled — Calculus I with an A and English Composition with a B+ — so first-time visitors instantly see a realistic 3.70 result and can edit it into their own schedule. Students use it to track a semester GPA, project what grades are needed for a scholarship cutoff, or estimate a cumulative average before applications. It is the simplest weighted GPA calculator for semester planning, with nothing to install or sign up for.
Examples
Default rows: Calculus I = A (4 credits), English Composition = B+ (3 credits)
GPA: 3.70 · Total credits: 7
Three rows: Chemistry = A (4 cr), History = B (3 cr), Art = A- (2 cr)
GPA: 3.60 · Total credits: 9
Two rows: Spanish = A (3 cr), Elective = C (0 credits)
GPA: 4.00 · Total credits: 3
How to use
- 1
Start from the two prefilled course rows or clear them and click the Add course button to build your schedule.
- 2
Type an optional name into each course field, or leave it blank — names do not affect the math.
- 3
Choose a Grade from the dropdown; each option shows its point value in parentheses, like B+ (3.3).
- 4
Enter the Credits for each row, using decimals for partial credits such as 1.5.
- 5
Read the large GPA figure, the Total credits stat, and the course-count badge — all update as you edit.
Common use cases
- Calculating a semester GPA before final grades are officially posted.
- Estimating a cumulative GPA for scholarship or graduate school applications.
- Testing which grade in a retake would push an average past a 3.5 cutoff.
- Tracking progress against an academic probation recovery plan.
- Weighting lab courses correctly against lecture credits in one view.
- Explaining to a new student how credit hours change the value of each grade.
Best practices
- Only rows with positive credit values count — check that a mistyped 0 or blank credit is not silently dropping a course.
- Confirm your school's scale matches this tool's fixed 4.0 scale; plus/minus point values vary between institutions.
- Use your official transcript as the source of truth, not memory — one wrong grade moves the average.
- Remember A+ carries the same 4.0 as A here, which matches most U.S. unweighted scales.
- Add every course in a term, including pass/fail if your school includes them, to keep the total credits honest.
- Round-trip check: multiply the shown GPA by total credits and compare with your own points sum.
Tips
- Leave a row's credits at 0 to see how the GPA would look without that course, without deleting the row.
- The grade dropdown's parenthetical point values double as a quick reference chart.
- Use decimals in credits for half-credit labs or mini-terms.
- The course-count badge counts rows, not included credits — check Total credits for what actually went into the math.
